What does this mean? It keeps going up and down while I'm driving

Hey, I noticed that this gauge in my car keeps moving up and down while I’m driving, and I’m not sure what it means. Can anyone help explain what’s going on?

That’s your oil pressure gauge. You should stop driving right away if you don’t want to risk destroying your engine.

That’s kinda funny because it’s been bouncing up and down for the last week and the car is still running fine.

All your warning lights are probably on, and you’re still driving? Enjoy buying a new car! :slightly_smiling_face:

To be fair, sensors in cars are often cheap parts. If the car is driving fine and the oil level is good, it’s probably just a faulty sensor.

It’s not a digital sensor, it’s an analog gauge. The fact that it’s bouncing, plus the warning lights, is a big red flag. You’re likely low on oil, and that can lead to serious issues. If this has been going on for a while, you’re looking at a big repair bill.

It could be a malfunctioning gauge, but if you’re low on oil, you might be in for an expensive repair soon.

First, check your oil level and scan for any engine codes, like a misfire. Make sure your exhaust isn’t blowing white smoke. Then, check your engine temperature and coolant levels. If everything checks out, your oil pump might need replacing.

That’s the magic genie lamp—get one wish, and hopefully it’s for a new engine. Seriously though, read the manual!

For real, just read the manual!

Your oil level might be low, or you could have a failing oil pump.

Or the oil pressure sensor could be going bad.

Does it look like your neighborhood is getting fogged for mosquitoes when you drive away? If not, check for oil leaks under your car. It’s unlikely to be electrical, but either way, stop driving unless you want to ruin your engine.

Took me a second to get that mosquito fogging joke, haha. Nice one!

You’re probably low on oil.

My oil pressure switch leaked last year, and I had similar issues. I didn’t drive it though. If you keep going, you’re going to ruin your engine.

Everyone’s saying you’re low on oil or your gauge is broken. It could be those things, but check the simple stuff first. Look at your oil level. If it’s fine, check under the car for an oil leak at the oil filter adapter. If there’s oil around the pressure sensor, that’s probably the issue. I had this problem, and after cleaning the electrical connector, I haven’t had any issues since. The gasket for the oil filter adapter is a known weak point, but it’s cheap to replace.

Finally, someone who actually read the whole question, thanks!

Isn’t it funny how the useful answers get buried under all the jokes?

RTFM (Read The Manual)!
