Just got a 2022 Expedition XLT… Now I have questions!

I recently bought a 2022 Expedition XLT with 51,000 miles. I traded in my 2017 F150 Lariat because I felt it was going to start needing expensive repairs, and I missed having an SUV. While I would have preferred a King Ranch or Platinum, I went with this XLT because of the great price.

After a week of driving it and reading posts here, I have a few questions:

  1. Should I get a Ford ESP warranty? I’m worried about the transmission issues I’ve read about. My Expedition was built in March 2022, and I have about 7–8 months left on the factory powertrain warranty (until 60k miles). Should I spend $3k–$4k on an ESP? If so, which plan?

  2. I miss some features from my old Lariat. Can I add an aftermarket front-facing camera that works with the Sync4 system? Can the rearview camera be upgraded? The quality is awful. Also, is it possible to add fog lights to the XLT?

  3. Any recommendations for upgrades or mods? I’ve already bought black Ford emblems to replace the blue ones, and tinting is next. I’m curious about other mods or upgrades you all have done.

  4. Forscan mods—what are some good ones? I’m new to this and looking for ideas.

  5. Tires—the current tires are Cooper Discoverer AT3 (LT275/65R18). They’re noisy and don’t give a smooth ride. Are there better options for a quieter and smoother ride?

Overall, I love my Expedition but wish I had gone for at least a Limited trim. What can I do to make my XLT feel closer to a Limited, King Ranch, or Platinum?

Look up Zeigler ESP PremiumCARE—that’s what I have. Also, check for recalls on the backup camera; it’s a known issue. For tires, I recommend Michelin LTX M/S2. They’re quiet, comfortable, great in rain and snow, and come with a 70k-mile warranty.

Is Zeigler a third-party company?

No, Zeigler and Flood are Ford dealerships that sell Ford ESPs online for much cheaper than local dealers.

Thanks :pray:

@Oli
No recalls are showing for my vehicle. I’ve read that the XLT just has a poor-quality camera.

Honestly, you might be better off trading it in for a Limited or higher trim. You can find 2023 Limiteds with lower mileage for around $42k. You might take a $3k–$5k hit, but it’ll save you from trying to make aftermarket fixes that might not work well. It’s worth checking with your dealer.

@Blayne
I thought about that and looked online. The only Limited within 150 miles or on sites like Carvana with comparable mileage is about $10k more. I found one $5k more, but it has 73k miles. The reason I went with my XLT was because it was the cheapest I found anywhere.

@Blayne
Where are you located? If you’re willing to travel, you can often find better deals. Let me know your state, and I’ll take a look. I’ve seen Limiteds with low miles for $42k–$45k without accidents.

@Blayne
I’m in Southeast Michigan. I’ve seen some white ones cheaper, but I really don’t want white. I’m looking for black or gray with under 55k miles.

@Blayne
If you’re open to traveling, you could find much better deals nationwide. It’s often worth the flight or shipping costs for a great deal.

Zeigler sells Ford warranties and usually cheaper than your local dealer. For fog lights, you can order factory fog lights with the bezels. Wiring might be tricky if the factory harness isn’t there, though.

@Cory
Sometimes the wiring is already there, like for other features. For example, I’ve added switches for descent control and other features using FORScan. You might get lucky.

@Cory
I’ll check under the bumper to see if the wiring harness is there. Thanks!

Most Forscan mods for the F150 work on the Expedition. My favorite is disabling the beep when you exit the car with the key inside.

For simple drop-down options, yes. But if you’re changing hex codes, be careful—programming can vary by model year. The 18–19 Expeditions have different hex codes than the 20+ models.

Forscan’s latest update lets you reload the factory code with a button, which is great if you forget to save your original settings before tinkering.

I’ve been looking at Expeditions and didn’t realize XLTs don’t have fog lights. Thanks for the heads-up.

As far as I know, no 2022 XLTs have fog lights or DRLs around the headlights. It’s just plastic trim.

That’s odd. My 2019 XLT has fog lights.
