Are Expeditions any good or just trouble?

I’m thinking about trading my mid-size SUV for an Expedition, but people online keep saying they’re bad news. Are they really that unreliable? Any advice or tips?

Every big SUV has its problems. It’s more about picking the issues you can live with.

True, same as cars. Just don’t want to deal with issues that cost $2,500 a month!

Check out the late 3rd-gen models from 2013-2017. The earlier ones had V8s, and the newer ones have the EcoBoost engines.

Thanks for the suggestion!

I’ve got a 2023 Expedition. It shifts a bit rough from 4th to 3rd sometimes, but overall, it’s been good. I did get an extended warranty just in case.

That’s a classic Ford thing. My 2023 Ranger does the same now and then. Driving with a heavy foot helps!

How’s it been holding up?

Same issue every now and then with downshifts, but nothing major so far.

How long have you had it?

It’s a 2023, so probably not too long.

Three months now. Most of the time, it runs perfectly fine.

We bought a new 2023 King Ranch. It’s over 7,000 miles now with no issues. I’ve heard the early 4th-gen Expeditions had problems, but they seem to have worked most of them out. I’d avoid 2018-2020 and maybe get an extended warranty just to be safe.

Thanks! I really like the Expedition, but I’ve been burned before. My BMW gave me trouble because the previous owner didn’t maintain it. Is 2020 the last year of the early 4th gen?

I have a 2017 EL, and it’s been great. I got it in 2021 with 62k miles and now it’s at 101k. I like that it still has the 6-speed transmission and no annoying auto start-stop. I replaced the shocks at 98k, which felt reasonable. Other than that, it’s just been oil changes and no big repairs.

Skip the Expedition and get a Sequoia. I compared it to the Tahoe and Expedition, and the Sequoia is way more reliable. Sure, it’s not great on gas, but I’ve never had to fix anything on mine. I’m at 150k miles with no issues. Look for a 2012+ model to avoid the air pump problems, and don’t get the Platinum trim unless you want to deal with rear air suspension. Go for a Limited if you want some luxury.

Thanks, man! I just looked up the Sequoia, and it’s awesome. I’m calling Toyota today to check one out!

Good choice! Don’t stress too much about mileage as long as the Carfax looks good. Feel free to message me if you have any questions—I’ve done a ton of research on these trucks.

Sequoias are nice but expensive for what they are.

Sequoias are hard to find now, everyone’s onto them!
