Hey all,
Just curious, how do you think the 5.0 Coyote or 2.7L would handle in an Expedition? I always thought it was strange they don’t offer either as an option.

I think the 5.0 would solve a lot of issues with the newer Expeditions. Only downside is the low torque at low RPMs, but other than that, it’s a powerhouse and pretty reliable. With emissions tightening up, though, I doubt we’ll see a Coyote in an Expedition anytime soon.
Ford seems to consider the 3.5 the premium engine for the Expedition, and at over $55K for the XLT, I guess they’re marketing it that way. Plus, the Expedition isn’t as high volume as the F-150, so it makes sense to keep the options limited. We’ve got the 3.5 in our 2020 Limited and it’s been great, especially the off-the-line torque. I’d miss that with the Coyote. Now, if only the transmissions were a bit better!
The 5.0 moves pretty well in an F-150 when in sport mode, so I’m sure it could handle an Expedition.
Either engine could work if Ford wanted to, but the 3.5 is like Ford’s crown jewel right now. It’s versatile, reliable, and great for towing. Plus, it gets better gas mileage than the 5.0.
Back in 2016, I was hoping Ford would put the 5.0 in the Expedition, but they went with EcoBoost instead. Meanwhile, Cadillac stuck with the V8 with cylinder deactivation. Gotta love the eco game!

If you don’t plan on towing, the 2.7 might be fine, right? Plus, I’ve heard no cam phaser issues with the 2.7.
@Gentry
The 2.7 is reliable, but it doesn’t have enough power to pull the weight of an Expedition. The best options would probably still be the 3.5 V6 or the 5.0.

Yeah, if they offered a 5.0 Expedition, I’d be all over it and probably slap a supercharger on it too!
I could maybe see the 2.7 in an Expedition if it was a hybrid. And the Coyote? Only if Ford or Lincoln decided to take on the Escalade V.
