Hey y’all, just got a 2019 Expedition Max Platinum, 55k miles when I bought it. Picked it up with a Ford Gold Certified badge and threw in an extended warranty. On my first road trip, felt like it randomly slipped into neutral, followed by a loud bang when I hit the gas on the highway. Finished the trip and took it to the dealer, and now they’re saying they’ll rebuild the transmission. Should I push for a full replacement, or is a rebuild gonna address all the issues?
I’d push for a replacement, man. Rebuilds are hit or miss, depending on the shop. If it’s under warranty, why not go for something new?
Honestly, a rebuild might be fine. Usually, they take care of the faulty parts during that process, and sometimes a rebuild means you’re getting more attention to detail than a brand-new transmission. Plus, less downtime waiting for a new one to arrive.
If you can get a new one, do it. My brother had his F-150’s tranny rebuilt, and he ended up with more issues down the line. Rebuilds can feel like a patch job sometimes.
Depends on the dealership. Some do killer rebuilds, but if you’re not confident in their work, might be worth pushing for that full replacement. Just weigh the potential wait time.
The dealership seems solid so far, but I’m still torn. The guy mentioned the rebuild comes with a warranty too. Anyone know if that’s standard?
Yep, the rebuild should come with a warranty, usually around 12k miles or a year, but it depends on the shop. I’d just make sure you have that in writing if you go that route.
Honestly, if the car’s still new-ish and under warranty, I’d hold out for the full replacement. You paid good money for it, might as well push for the best possible outcome.
Yeah btw, rebuilds are cheaper for the dealer, so they’ll usually push for that first. If it’s under warranty, I’d also aim high and go new.
