Found this 2007 Expedition EL Eddie Bauer edition online. What do you all think?
That model has the 3v 5.4 Triton engine. Cam phasers can be a real headache. I’d avoid it unless you’re ready to drop another 5k for a new engine.

Yeah, that extra 5k would put me way over what I had planned to spend. Thanks for the heads up, I’ll avoid it then .
@Zen
It wouldn’t cost 5k just to replace the phasers, more like 1000 per side. I had two Expeditions with the 5.4 over 20 years. The cam phasers can be an issue, but with good maintenance, that engine lasted me over 300,000 miles on both.
At that price, I’d buy it in a second… too bad it’s not 4WD. But it does have the 6R75 transmission. Make sure to only use Mercon SP fluid.
Looks like it’s not from the salt belt, which is a plus.

290,000 miles? I’d keep looking. You might have better luck checking out police or government auctions in that price range.

Agreed. At least with police trucks, you know they were maintained. This one looks pretty rough, understandable for the age, but I’d bet it wasn’t well taken care of.
@Ming
You’re probably right. When I went to see it, it definitely needed some work and didn’t seem like it had been maintained well.

Thanks for the tip! I didn’t know about those auctions. I’ll definitely start looking into them. My budget is between $1,000 and $3,000, maybe $5,000 max if the car is in good shape.
@Zen
You should be able to find something decent for that price. Just keep a little extra cash aside for small repairs like a new battery or tires.

Good advice! I’ll make sure to do that. Thanks again for all the help .
With that many miles, I’d pass.

I hear you. I’m going to pass on it. Thanks!
I wouldn’t recommend buying a high-mileage 3v 5.4.

Why’s that? I know the mileage is high, but are there other reasons to avoid the 3v 5.4?

They’ve got some common issues that can turn into big headaches:
Timing problems
Spark plug issues
Intake manifold troubles
I’ve rebuilt a few Triton engines, and I wouldn’t buy another.
@Ripley
Got it. Thanks for the warning! Do you have any recommendations for more reliable years or models?
I bought an ‘07 just like that with 250k miles. I did a full timing job and locked the cam phasers. It’s at 290k now and runs better than ever. Tows like a champ and hasn’t let me down yet. Mine’s 2WD too. If you don’t want it, let folks here know—someone else might be looking.
@Skyler
Sounds like you’ve had good luck with yours! I’ll pass on this one though. For anyone interested, it’s at Triple R Auto Sales in Fort Worth, Texas: 4521 Hemphill St, Fort Worth, TX 76115.
