Switched to LED signal lights, but they still flash too fast… what’s the fix?

One of my signal lights went out, and it caused the fast flashing issue. I decided to swap all of them for LEDs, thinking it would fix the problem. Now they all work, but the fast blinking is still happening. Is there a setting I can adjust to fix this, or do I need to go back to the OEM bulbs?

The problem is LEDs use less power, so your truck thinks a bulb is out. You can fix this by adding resistors to the wiring. You can find them online, or you could use something like Forscan to update your truck’s settings.

I’ve got a 2022 Timberline and had the same issue when I switched to LEDs. The rapid blinking only happens inside the truck, so I just live with it.

Another option is to get LED bulbs with built-in resistors. Look for ones labeled “no hyper flash.”

Thanks for the tip! I’ll check out those bulbs with built-in resistors.

How’s the setup working for you? What brand of LEDs did you use? I’ve been thinking about switching out the bulbs on my ‘22 Timberline, but I’ve had bad luck with LED bulbs in the past. They either overheat or start hyper-flashing after a while.

@Luca
I swapped mine out not long after I got the truck in 2023. I used these reverse lights and these brake lights. The reverse lights are super bright, though one burned out after about a year. The brake lights have been solid so far, and I didn’t bother reprogramming anything with Forscan.

Also, I replaced the license plate lights with these, and they’re still going strong. I haven’t had any overheating issues, even when using the zone lighting.

Totally agree, though—it’s crazy how these trucks don’t come with LEDs all around at this price.

@Hart
Thanks for the info! I’ve already done the reverse and license plate lights, so it’s mainly the brake/turn signal LEDs I’m worried about overheating. I’ll check out the ones you linked!

No problem! Hopefully, the links help someone else, too. This is the first truck I’ve done LED upgrades on, and it’s been a good experience overall.

Appreciate the reply. I should’ve mentioned the fast blinking is only on the inside—outside, they blink normally. It’s mostly fine, but it drives my wife nuts.

Haha, I get it. My fiancée was annoyed at first, but she’s used to it now.

Yep, like others have said, you need either bulbs with built-in resistors or to reprogram the truck so it stops expecting the higher resistance of regular bulbs. If the higher trims with factory LEDs don’t have this issue, it’s probably because their computer settings are different.

One thing to check: LEDs are polarity-sensitive, so you’ve got to make sure they’re installed the right way. With regular bulbs, it doesn’t matter, but it does with LEDs.

Good point, but that’s not causing the rapid blinking in this case.
