Stuff keeps falling out of my 2007 Expedition… how do you stop it?

I’ve had my 2007 Expedition for years and love it, but there’s one thing driving me nuts. Every time I open the tailgate, something falls out!

I’ve tried using milk crates, but those are only good for small things. I also looked at cargo mats with raised edges, but I’m not sure if they’d actually help. Once, I even tried attaching a metal strip, but that was a terrible idea—I almost cut my hand a few times.

Anybody have tips or tricks to keep stuff from sliding out? What works for you?

I usually open the rear glass first to check if anything’s slid back before opening the tailgate. It’s saved me a few headaches.

Why didn’t I think of that? Haha, I feel so dumb now. Thanks for the tip!

I use a tension shower curtain rod. I place it just above the sloped part of the floor, and it keeps things in place. I also combined it with a cargo net, threading the rod through the bottom of the net. Works like a charm!

@Dezi
That’s a clever idea. I never thought of using something like that. Thanks for sharing!

You might want to try a cargo net. My parents had one for their Yukon, and they only used it for road trips with lots of stuff. Here’s one I found online:

Thanks! I hadn’t considered a net before. I’ve been stuck looking at Ford-branded accessories, which are pretty limited now. I’ll check this out!

No problem! Honestly, I usually just do the trick the other commenter mentioned about opening the glass first.

This reminds me of the time my wife yelled at me for not opening the tailgate fast enough. We had a watermelon in the back that nearly rolled out like it was trying to escape. Gotta love SUVs with flat cargo areas!

@Brady
Same thing happened to me once! Except my watermelon didn’t stop—it went SPLAT all over the driveway. Lesson learned!

Here’s my solution: make your last stop a hard brake.

Modern problems require modern solutions, right? If it’s all on the dashboard, it can’t fall out the back!

I feel your pain—this used to drive me nuts too. My go-to was opening the rear glass to check for anything that shifted, but I still had stuff fall out when I forgot. Eventually, I installed a cargo net near the back of the cargo area. It’s been a lifesaver! The one I got has pockets for smaller items, and I used spacers and carabiner clips to secure it tightly. Honestly, I kicked myself for not installing it sooner since it was sitting in my garage for years!
