Should I buy this 2021 Expedition for my big family?

I need an SUV that can fit my large family, and I’ve been looking at a 2021 Expedition with 41,000 miles. I really like the truck, but I’m wondering if buying one is a mistake because of issues I’ve heard about with Expeditions. What do you all think? Is it worth it?

I recently got a 2021 Expedition Max and absolutely love it. I also purchased a 3-year Ford extended warranty just in case (mainly because of the transmission concerns).

The Max is spacious, handles surprisingly well, has a good turning radius, and is easy to park for its size. With the seats folded down, it fits full 4’ x 8’ sheets of plywood. With the seats up, there’s still plenty of room for groceries, luggage, or anything else.

We’ve taken family vacations with two big dogs, three heavy e-bikes on a hitch mount, and a full roof rack. It handles everything comfortably. Zero regrets.

@Jess
We have a large family, so space is a big priority for us too. Thanks for sharing your experience!

We just bought a 2022 Expedition XLT with 27,000 miles, and it’s been great so far. Took a 500-mile trip with the wife and three kids recently—plenty of room for everyone.

Are you worried about issues you’ve experienced yourself or ones you’ve heard about? I’ve been shopping for an Expedition too, focusing on 2021 and 2022 models, and I haven’t come across too many horror stories.

@Jalen
I’m worried about issues I’ve heard others mention, especially with the transmission. I really like the vehicle, though.

Got it. From what I’ve heard, staying on top of fluid changes and regular maintenance can help keep the transmission running smoothly. I’ve driven Fords my whole life, but I’ve noticed some decline in their large SUVs and F150s. I’ve even started looking at Toyotas, though my heart is set on the Expedition.

We’ve looked at Toyotas too. I currently drive a 2015 Edge with 207,000 miles, and my husband has a 2017 F150. Both have been great vehicles for us.

Definitely get an extended warranty if you buy it.

I have a 2019 Expedition with 70,000 miles. Aside from a trunk button breaking and a sticky running board, it’s been great. Oh, and a tree branch smashed my window yesterday, but that’s not the truck’s fault.

At 41,000 miles, it should have already had at least one transmission service. If it hasn’t, do it ASAP. Otherwise, you might be complaining about a ‘random’ transmission failure in a couple of years.

We have a 2020 Expedition Max and have taken it up and down the East Coast with no mechanical issues. Six people in our family, and with a rooftop box, it’s perfect for road trips.

I’ve got a 2016 4x4 with 81,000 miles. It’s been a great truck, and we’re looking at upgrading to a Max since our family is growing. Definitely want the performance package, though!

I just bought a 2021 Expedition Max Limited with 33,000 miles last week. I also got a 7-year, 150,000-mile Ford Premium Care ESP for peace of mind. I had a 2016 Tahoe LTZ that blew its transmission at 124,000 miles—cost me $8,000 out of pocket. I’m loving the Expedition so far, but I wouldn’t trust any modern vehicle without an extended warranty, especially with all the tech in them these days.

I’ve got a 2019 Expedition with 65,000 miles and no issues so far. You might also want to consider a 2021 or newer Tahoe. They’re solid trucks, and I think the interior layout is better than the Ford’s.

@Sullivan
I’ll take a look at the Tahoe, but I really like how spacious the Expedition is.

@Sullivan
The 2021+ Tahoe is actually a bit roomier—it’s 82" wide compared to the Expedition’s 80". My parents just got one, so I’ve had a chance to compare. I prefer the Ford’s powertrain and ride comfort, but the Chevy has a better interior and handling.

Update: I bought a 2021 Expedition Limited with 18,500 miles, gold certified. So far, I love the truck and hope it stays trouble-free. :+1:

How’s your Expedition been so far? I’m looking at a gold-certified 2021 and would love some feedback.

@Shan
We love it! No issues so far—other than hitting my first deer after living in Michigan for 24 years. Just minor damage, thankfully.
