Rear Suspension for Heavy Loads

Hey folks, I’ve got a 2010 Ford Expedition Limited 4x4 and after hauling my boat (around 6,000 lbs), the rear end dipped a bit more than I’d like. Any recommendations to beef up the rear suspension?

Have you tried air shocks? I put them on my '09 Expedition for towing and it’s been a game changer. No more sagging. Plus, the ride stays smooth when not towing.

I use heavy-duty coil springs on my 2007. They’re cheap and do the job, but the ride gets rough. If you like comfort, maybe look at airbags or helper springs.

Ever thought of Timbren bump stops? They only kick in when needed, so no rough ride when you’re not towing. Added them to my '11, and they work great! Plus, super easy to install.

I had the same issue on my ‘08. I ended up with airbags, and they’ve been awesome. But if you’re off-roading, be careful—they can pop. Learned that the hard way in Moab, lol.

Just lower your expectations.:joy: In all seriousness, airbags or a weight distribution hitch might help. But also, did you make sure your trailer’s weight is balanced properly? Sometimes shifting cargo around can help too.

I swear by coilover conversions. Got tired of the stock suspension, so I switched everything. My '06 Expedition rides better than ever. Little pricier, but I’ve never looked back.

Thanks, guys!. I’m leaning toward airbags based on the feedback. @TrailBlazinSUV, I don’t do much off-roading, so I think I’ll be good.

@JourneyWithFord, just be aware, airbags can be tricky to maintain. I’ve had buddies complain about leaks after a few years. You might wanna get a good warranty if you go that route.

Agreed. But honestly, if you’re towing regularly, the comfort is worth it. If they leak, it’s usually a cheap fix. Nothing a weekend warrior can’t handle.

Or just keep a compressor handy like I do :joy:

True, but nothing beats the simplicity of good ol’ coil springs, man. Less to go wrong, you know?

Yeah, but my back loves those airbags. I’ll take a little maintenance for comfort any day. :sunglasses:

Speaking of back pain, I drove cross-country with the stock suspension once. Never again. Air shocks, airbags—just something.
