I just took my 2017 Expedition in for its 100,000-mile service. They quoted me $1600 total, but when I asked what was costing the most, they said it’s the platinum spark plugs and labor — $1100 just for that! Am I losing it, or is this way too much to pay for plugs? Would love some opinions.
I changed the spark plugs on my 2018 myself, and it was super easy. Definitely a good way to save some cash.
For $1100, do they throw in a team of eunuchs feeding you grapes?
They’re totally overcharging. Spark plugs cost about $15 each. If you have a V8, that’s $120 total for parts. It’s a 20-30 minute job if you do it yourself. Just go for Motorcraft plugs, and you’re good.
They’re ripping you off, plain and simple. Do it yourself if you can!
That labor rate is insane. For the 3.5 EcoBoost, you only need 6 plugs, and labor should be around 1.3 to 1.5 hours depending on the area and how competitive shops are.
Total scam!
My local dealer quoted me $400 for plugs and labor on a 2020 model, which still felt high but not outrageous. Did you ask if anything else was included in that $1100?
Absolute rip-off. Motorcraft spark plugs run around $10-$15 each for a V6, so about $90 max. Add in a $15 spark plug wrench and you’re good for 30 minutes of work every 50k miles.
I’d suggest finding an independent repair shop instead. Only go to the dealership if it’s a recall or free repair.
That does seem high. My 100k service on my ’19 5.0 was less than $1k and included plugs, coolant flush, and cabin filter. Still felt like a lot, though.
I can change the plugs on my ’15 in half an hour. $1100 is insane!
I’ve got a 2015, and the plugs were easy to reach. Cost me about $6 per plug to do myself.
Did they mention if they swapped out the coils, too? Those can be pricey and might explain the higher cost.
I can see $1100 if it included more, like filters, plugs, oil, ATF, diffs, coolant, and brake fluid. Our Lexus service for 100k is over $1500 for everything.
Was this at a dealer? Sounds like a poorly trained advisor who isn’t explaining things properly. If that’s really just for plugs, it’s nuts.
