I’m thinking about getting a 2019-2021 Expedition. I love how they ride and drive, but I’m concerned about their reliability. I know Fords have a reputation for transmission problems.
As a mom with another baby on the way, I need a bigger vehicle, especially since we take a lot of road trips. What are your thoughts?
I have an ESP from Ford (Ford Protect) to cover mechanical issues. My 2019 had transmission problems and an AC leak, but it saved our lives in a rollover accident caused by a hit-and-run. After it was totaled, we got a lightly used 2021, which has been trouble-free so far (30k miles on it now). I do expect transmission issues in the future, though.
One downside is depreciation. These lose value faster than most vehicles, especially in the first few years. If I could go back, I’d probably choose the newer Toyota Sequoia instead.
I read your story about the accident! That’s incredible. I’ve seen the safety ratings for Expeditions, and it’s reassuring. I’m so sorry you went through that, though.
The transmissions have some issues but not complete failures like some other models. The 3.5L EcoBoost engines have proven to be pretty solid by this generation.
Are you referring to the 3.5L EcoBoost? I’ve heard good things about them, but I really don’t want to end up spending a ton on repairs right after buying.
Yes, it’s reliable if you stay on top of maintenance. They’ve been around since about 2010 and have dual injection. Be sure to use full synthetic oil and change the air filters regularly.
I’m very diligent about maintenance, so that’s great to hear. I’ll be checking out a few soon and hopefully making a purchase. Thank you for your input—it’s so helpful and appreciated!
