Hey y’all! … I’ve got a 2010 Ford Expedition Limited with the tow package, and it’s got both a 4-pin and 7-pin hookup. I’m looking to pull a two-axle camper soon, and I need to pick up a trailer brake controller. Any recommendations on which one to go for? And do I need anything else to get it all set up?
You definitely need to get the Tekonsha P3. Easy to install and has a screen that gives you all the info you need. You might need a wiring harness adapter, but nothing too crazy.
Personally, I’ve always gone with the Curt Echo. No hard install, just plug it in, and you’re good. Plus, it connects to your phone, so you can monitor everything right there.
Oh wow, a brake controller that uses an app? That’s pretty cool, but I’m worried my phone might die at the wrong time . Have you ever had any issues with the connection dropping though?
Nah, I haven’t had any major connection issues. It was just once when I forgot to turn on Bluetooth, and I had a mini heart attack, but after that, it was smooth sailing.
I second the Tekonsha btw, but I’d go with the Prodigy P2 if you’re looking to save a few bucks. Same great performance, just a little simpler without all the bells and whistles. For a 2-axle, it’ll handle it no problem.
I’m old school, so I go with the Redarc Tow-Pro Elite. It’s a bit more work to install, but once it’s in, you get a super clean look, and it’s super reliable especially If you plan on towing a lot, it’s worth it… No screens or apps, just a simple dial on your dash.
Btw bro, don’t forget to check if you’ve got the brake controller wiring already tucked under your dash. Most Expeditions with the tow package have it, but if not, you’ll need a wiring harness. Happened to me with my '09 Expedition… fun surprise there
I didn’t even think about checking that. How hard was it to find the wiring? Is it hidden away, or is it pretty obvious?
It’s tucked away kinda annoyingly, but it’s there. Should be up near the brake pedal, a little bundle of wires.
Yeah, they really like to hide that wiring. It took me forever to find it than actually installing the controller.
And by the way, if you’re doing this all yourself, get some zip ties to keep everything clean under there. Don’t wanna accidentally kick loose wires while driving.
Totally agree, loose wires are a no-go. And if you ever get into towing a bigger trailer, the Tekonsha P3 can handle it too, so it’s future-proof. I use mine for both my small camper and a horse trailer.
