Hi everyone! I recently bought a certified used 2022 Limited and really enjoy it. The car looks great, has plenty of space, and drives well. My only issue is with the ride comfort.
The dealership put on new 275/55 R20 tires, but they feel kind of rough. They’re Advanta tires, and while they grip well, every bump, vibration, or pothole is super noticeable.
I’ve seen people here recommend Michelin Defender tires for better comfort. They’re pricey (over $1,000), but would they really make a difference? Or could the issue be more about the suspension being too stiff?
Thanks in advance for your help! Oh, and the car had 68k miles when I got it.
Better tires helped a lot with noise in our 2019 Expedition. Michelin tires are excellent, but since your tires are new, maybe give them some time unless the ride is unbearable.
How many miles on your car? What kind of suspension? The stock shocks usually don’t last beyond 60k miles, and bad shocks can ruin the ride. I replaced mine at 70k with Bilstein 5100s. They’re firmer than I’d like, but it’s better than worn-out shocks.
Tires are one of the easiest upgrades for better comfort. You usually get what you pay for, too. By the way, 22” wheels ride rougher because they have less sidewall compared to 20” wheels.
Michelin Defenders are absolutely worth it. I put them on my 2019 XLT with 20s, and they’ve been better in every way—better grip in wet and snow, smoother ride, quieter on the highway. Can’t compare them to Advanta, though.
If the current tires are bothering you, go for the upgrade. You can try selling the old ones online. Also, ask the dealership if there are software updates for the suspension system. Sometimes module updates can improve ride quality significantly.
