Aftermarket intake and exhaust on 3.5 Ecoboost… is it worth it?

Thinking about adding an aftermarket intake and cat-back exhaust to my 2019 Expedition MAX Platinum. I’m curious about what kind of performance gains people usually see.

Will it improve MPG or horsepower? I know tuning makes the biggest difference, but I’m not planning to tune it. Is adding these mods without a tune just throwing money away?

I had a tune on my 2020 Max and no other mods. I could hit 0-60 in 4.7 seconds on a draggy and ran a 13.5 1/4 mile. Also removed the speed limiter.

I still have my Livernois handheld tuner I’d sell cheap, but you’d need a new tune from them. My wife wanted something smaller, so we switched to an Aviator. Fun fact: I once smoked a buddy’s ‘05 Mustang GT while towing a wood chipper.

I wouldn’t mess with the intake or exhaust without re-tuning. The small gains you might get wouldn’t be worth it.

Also, changing those parts can throw off your air/fuel ratios, and you don’t want to run lean under boost. Heat and detonation could destroy your engine in seconds.

If you want more bang for your buck, look into a flex-fuel setup to run E85. It lets you increase timing and boost while keeping cooler intake temps.

One issue is that many kits are designed for the F-150, not the Expedition. Check out Livernois Motorsports—they’re a good place to start for parts: https://www.livernoismotorsports.com/

Yeah, without a tune, it’s pretty much a waste of money.

Don’t waste your money. Just get it tuned.
