2016 Expedition Max Platinum… Worth it?

I’m looking at a 2016 Expedition Max Platinum with 231,000 km for $27,800 (in Canada). The mileage is higher than I wanted, but I plan to drive it for the next 5–10 years or until it’s done. I’ll be on maternity leave for a year, so I won’t be adding much mileage at first. Just need something safe, reliable, spacious for my family and dog, good in brutal winters, and capable of towing a boat in summer. Worth it or not?

I bought a 2005 Expedition with 227k miles for $1,200 USD two years ago. Honestly, the price you’re looking at seems insane. Even with the Platinum trim, which is just more gadgets that can break, it feels way overpriced. If it were me, I wouldn’t even pay half that price unless it came with a killer warranty. Also, keep in mind that the $27,800 price is probably if you finance, and interest rates are high right now. You’ll end up paying closer to $35,500 in the end.

I’ve had Fords for years and love their trucks, but the more bells and whistles, the more stuff breaks. If you want reliable, go for a base model. No fancy extras. For this price, I’d pass hard.

No way.

For this price, you can find something way better. Ford is great at trucks, but when it comes to their SUVs, I’d go with a Toyota Sequoia instead.

An older 4Runner could work too, but the Sequoia is closer in size to what you’re looking at. 4Runners are solid but not as spacious inside.

True. The Sequoia fits the size better, but I’ll admit we had a Ford Edge for 5 years and it was flawless.

Go for it.

Please don’t buy an Expedition. Biggest regret of my life. They’re a nightmare with that kind of mileage. Trust me, don’t make the same mistake—it ruined my year.

If you hate them so much, why are you still following this forum?

Seriously, a lot of folks here seem to have had bad experiences but still hang out. It’s weird.

Buy a Jeep instead.

That price is crazy. It should be about half of that. Looks like they’re trying to price gouge.

Nope.

I wouldn’t feel good about that deal. Last year, I got a 2012 Expedition XLT fully loaded with a warranty and only 40k miles for $23k.

Wow. I paid $26k for a 2017 XLT with 33k miles… three years ago!

We bought a 2015 Expedition EL Platinum with 38k miles back in 2020 for $36k. It was the cheapest one we could find at the time, and we even had to go three states over to get it.

We ended up trading it in after six months for a 2019 Expedition Max and got $42k for the trade-in.

That mileage? No way. I’d pay maybe $3k tops, and that’s only for parts to scrap.

For $25k, you could get a brand-new Nissan Sentra. It might not look as flashy, but at least you won’t end up stranded or embarrassed.

You can do so much better.
