Hey all, just picked up a 2013 Expedition EL XLT 4WD in Florida for $9K back in February. It had 180K miles on it, and so far I’ve swapped out the front brakes and rear shocks. It’s been running great, and I’m sitting at 210K miles now. Thinking about getting the torque converter swapped soon and maybe looking at the transmission since it’s been feeling a little sluggish. I’ve already done a transmission fluid change and swapped the filter. Any other common issues I should be on the lookout for with this model?
Check the cam phasers. They can get loud. That’s usually an issue around your mileage.
Keep an eye on the rear diff seals, mine went bad at 190K. Cheap fix though.
Lol, I love how you just casually drop “maybe a new transmission.” Ford life, am I right?
Haha, yeah. Gotta prepare for the worst with these things, right? Better than getting stuck somewhere middle of nowhere.
Water pump. Mine started leaking right around 200K miles. It’s a pain, but better to catch it early.
Mine’s at 250K and still running strong. Just change the oil and keep up with the fluids, you’ll be golden.
Check the timing chain tensioners too. If you hear any rattling, that could be a problem.
I’ve heard that about the timing chain. No rattling so far, but I’ll keep that in mind! Thanks for the heads-up.
Oh, and don’t forget about the blend door actuator. Mine went out and I had no AC on a road trip. Fun times.
Lol, same. I spent a summer in Georgia with no AC because of that stupid actuator. Almost melted.
You guys are making me nervous now. My AC is fine… for now.
Ha Don’t worry, it only breaks at the worst possible time. Like, 110 degrees in Texas bad. Ask me how I know.
The Expedition feels like a ticking time bomb sometimes. But when they run, they run great.
Haha… You love it until you hear a weird noise, and then you’re like, “Welp, there goes another $500.”
I feel that in my soul. Just wait until you have to replace something like the power steering pump.
Don’t forget about the wheel bearings too. Mine started humming at like 220K. The sound will drive you nuts before it fails.
Oh man, I had a hum recently. Thought it was the tires… Guess I better get the bearings checked. Thanks for the heads-up.
You’re basically playing “what breaks next?” but at least you got it for a good price.
Exactly. These trucks are workhorses, but you gotta be prepared to throw a little money at them as they age.
