Hi everyone,
I’m wondering how the 5.0 Coyote and 2.7L engines would work in the Expedition. Anyone else find it strange that Ford doesn’t offer these engines in it?

I feel like the 5.0 would fix a lot of issues with the newer Expeditions. It doesn’t have much low-end torque, but it’s powerful and pretty reliable. But with the push toward electric, seeing a Coyote in an Expedition seems less likely each year.
Ford sees the 3.5 as their ‘premium’ engine for the Expedition, especially with the XLT starting over $55K. It’s not as high volume as the F150, so I guess they simplify the options.
We’ve been happy with the 3.5 in ours. We’ve had a 2020 Limited since new, and honestly, I wouldn’t want the 2.7 or the Coyote in it. I’d miss the strong low-end torque for sure. Now, if only the transmissions were better!
The 5.0 in an F150 moves pretty well in sport mode, so I think it would do fine in an Expedition too.
Either engine would work in the Expedition if Ford wanted to make it happen. But as others mentioned, the 3.5 is Ford’s pride and joy. It’s versatile and, if you keep it maintained, lasts for years. For towing, it’s hard to beat, plus the gas mileage is better than with the 5.0.
Back in 2016, I was hoping Ford would add the 5.0 to the Expedition, but they went the other way with the Ecoboost. Meanwhile, competitors like Cadillac kept the full V8 with cylinder shutdown.
Guess they went all-in on the eco trend.

If you’re not planning on towing, the 2.7 might be alright, don’t you think? Plus, the 2.7 doesn’t have those cam phaser issues.

The 2.7 is solid and reliable, but I don’t think it’s powerful enough for the size and weight of an Expedition. The current 3.5 V6 or 5.0 would be better fits.

Yeah, if there were a 5.0 Expedition, I’d definitely get one and probably add a supercharger to it!
I could maybe see a 2.7 in the Expedition if they made it a hybrid. As for the Coyote, that would probably only happen if Ford or Lincoln wanted to compete with something like the Escalade V.
