Transmission died on my 2020… anyone else having these issues?

How often should the transmission be serviced? I’ve read so many different things, but it seems like 50k miles is the most common recommendation.

Anywhere from 30k to 100k, depending on the transmission. Personally, I think these need to be serviced closer to 30k, but 50k is probably fine. The drums tend to fail because of heat and scuffing, so changing the oil can help prevent that.

Also, you can have the transmission ‘built’ for better performance, and these issues should go away.

Edit: Another commenter mentioned 20k, and that’s from someone who rebuilds these transmissions often. I’d rather change the oil more frequently and keep my transmission in good shape.

Thanks for the advice!

I had a 2018 Navigator, and they had to replace the whole transmission after trying to repair the 10R80. Thankfully, I had Lincoln PremiumCARE, so it was covered. I didn’t tow or put much strain on it, and it still went out at 63k miles. Did a fluid change at 40k at the dealership too. Treated it well, but still had issues.

I’ve seen on YouTube that these need to be serviced every 20k miles. That’s coming from a guy who rebuilds them for a living. Just bought a 2024 Expedition Max, so I guess I’ll see how it holds up.

That sounds ridiculous, just a way for them to make more money. Ford should be sued.

Not really, a lot of manufacturers recommend transmission services around 60k miles. People just tend to forget about it and only focus on engine maintenance, ignoring the transmission, transfer case, and differentials.

I had a 2016 Suburban that needed a new transmission at 140k miles. Also had to replace the AC cooling radiator because it rusted out after just 4 years, which cost $1,000. Now the dealer says my coolant lines are leaking, so I’m looking at other options after four Suburbans.

We’re replacing the transmission on our 2020 Expedition, and it has under 100k miles. There’s a known TSB and some lawsuits about the 10R80, especially with the internal seal going bad.

I feel your frustration. Good luck with the repair!

In my opinion, the older Expeditions are still better than the new ones.

I’ve seen a nice used 2020 Ranger FX4 for sale at a great price, but the 10R80 scares me.

Just make sure you get the new CDF drum and trash can.

Ford updated the CDF clutch cylinder a few years ago, which improved the transmission’s reliability. The old aluminum drum had a steel sleeve that would shift out of place, but the new design prevents that.

My 2020’s transmission died at just 28k miles.

I can relate! Bought my 2018 two years ago, and in 18 months, I’ve spent over $20,000 in repairs, including a new transmission. I hate this car so much.

Sorry to hear that happened to you. Ford really needs to extend the transmission warranty on these Expeditions. Mine went out last winter while I was driving up a mountain, and it was still under warranty, thankfully. The replacement would’ve cost $10k otherwise.

Just had my wife’s 2019 transmission rebuilt at 66k miles. It was going to cost $5,800, but I called Ford, and they covered 70% of it. The new CDF drum should fix the problem.

What do you mean by ‘died’? Does it not work at all anymore?

The transmission is completely shot. They tried reprogramming it, but that didn’t work. Now they’re going to rebuild it. It slips in all gears, so it’s not safe to drive.
