Thinking about a 2020 Ford Expedition Max Limited… Worth it?

What do you all think about this deal? I’ve been eyeing the Expedition Max for a while now and feel close to buying. But with all the talk about the car market dropping soon, I’m worried I’ll buy this and then see a similar one go for $30k in a few months.

The car market is cooling down right now, but that’s how it usually is for used cars. The past few years were just crazy. Only you can decide if it’s the right time to buy. Will it drop by $1,000 in 2-3 months? Maybe. By $10k? Probably not.

I bought a 2020 Expedition Max Limited in 2022 from a rental with 49k miles. The key for me was that it didn’t have a sunroof because I didn’t want to deal with potential leaks or issues. It’s been great so far—now at 66k miles with no problems other than cleaning the power steps. Rentals can be hit or miss, so it’s all about how well it was taken care of.

Good to know! My trade-in is something to consider too—if I wait, my car will lose value as well. Can I ask what you paid for yours? Do you think this one is a good deal?

Yeah, everything depreciates over time, so you have to weigh it all. Mine was through a third party, so I got it for less and didn’t have to deal with extra fees. Not exactly comparable to your situation.

That said, the price you’re seeing looks reasonable for a 2020 Max Limited with 40k miles and 4WD. Make sure to check the Carfax and maintenance history carefully.

That Expedition was a rental with 40k miles. Personally, I’d avoid it.

If you do go for it, though, make sure to max out the extended warranty. The CPO Gold coverage helps, but I’d still budget an extra $4-5k for that warranty extension.

When you test drive, pay attention to how it shifts, especially between 3rd and 4th gear. Try driving it under load (like on a hill) to see if the transmission struggles. Pre-2022 Expeditions and F-150s often have a faulty CDF drum, which can lead to major issues. Repairs can cost around $4k.

This isn’t about it being a rental—it’s a known problem across these models. Definitely max out the warranty if you decide to buy.

I had a terrible experience with my 2018 Expedition. It had so many problems—lift gate issues, the second-row seat getting stuck, sunroof breaking, and now the transmission went out at 87k miles. Ford wouldn’t honor the warranty properly, and we ended up spending tens of thousands on repairs. I’d steer clear.

I looked at Expeditions but ended up going with a Sequoia. It’s been rock solid—no issues even with high miles. If you need that extra third-row space, though, maybe look into a Suburban or Yukon XL. They’ve had their issues too, but I’d trust them over the Expedition for long-term reliability.

Someone told me you can refinance when the market drops. Does anyone know if that’s true?
