Should we go with the Max or not?

We’re about to buy our first Expedition, but we can’t decide if we should go with the Max. Not sure if the extra space is worth the hassle of parking and driving in the city.

Also, would love to hear thoughts on Limited vs Platinum. Is the upgrade worth it?

If you have 3 or more kids, go for the Max. No question.

I should probably explain more—our kids are grown and out of the house. We’ve had vans for 30 years, so this is a big change. We’re downsizing to one car, but we need to tow a boat. Planning to travel a lot after retirement too. I’d love to pull a small Airstream one day, but my husband isn’t sold on that idea yet!

@Nico
If you don’t need to use the third row often and won’t be packing it full of stuff, the regular version should be fine. It should also tow slightly better. The Max is great if you need third-row space and a trunk.

@Nico
The regular version does give you a little more towing capacity with the HD Tow package, but if you’re that close to the limit, you’re probably pushing the Expedition more than you should.

One thing the Max does help with is towing stability because of the longer wheelbase.

As for trim, it really comes down to what features you want and what you’re willing to pay. Check out what’s standard on the Platinum and see if those features are worth it. Some things—like power running boards—might be a hassle, while others—like massaging seats—might be worth it.

@Tobin
We’re definitely getting the HD Tow package, but our boat and trailer together are just under 3,000 lbs. Good to know about the stability though—thanks!

At 3,000 lbs, you could easily get by with an Explorer.

@Lennon
Yeah, but my husband wants at least 9,000 lbs towing capacity for a few different reasons.

Gotcha, that definitely narrows it down. If you don’t need tons of space for people or gear, the regular version should work fine. The Platinum trim does have nicer seats, though—it’s pricey, but there are a few cool features.

@Nico
Don’t go Max. We have two kids, and the Limited has been perfect. Plenty of room for a family of four, and guests can still ride in the third row without an issue.

If you can afford it, get the Max. You won’t regret it.

Affording it is the real question… I still can’t believe how expensive cars are these days :joy:

I feel you. When I bought my Expedition back in ‘07, fully loaded was $48K. Now they’re pushing $100K. That’s why I don’t buy new anymore.

Street parking is definitely tougher with the Max (or a Transit, for that matter). It’s doable, but be ready for the extra length.

I went with the regular version for the extra towing capacity and easier city driving. It’s been great for both.

Once in a while, I wish I had the Max when I need to haul kids in the third row and carry gear because there’s barely any trunk space when the third row is up. I might get a roof carrier to fix that.

If you won’t use the third row much, I’d say the regular version is perfect.

We got the Platinum and love it. Didn’t see the point in paying $15K more for a Lincoln Navigator when this had everything we wanted. We’re empty nesters too, but somehow, every time we travel, the car is packed full.

@Hutton
Oh, one more thing—parking is actually easier than I expected. Backup cameras help a lot.

@Hutton
So you got the Max?

Nope, we stuck with the regular one. Handles better in tight spots, but honestly, the 360° cameras make the Max manageable too. It’s only about 9 inches longer.

If grandkids are in the picture at all, get the Max.
