If it’s got the 4.6 engine, go for it. If it’s the 5.4, you’re taking a risk.
I’ve got a '99 Expedition XLT with 193,000 miles. Still runs great, but it leaks oil and the odometer works only occasionally. That said, the '99 is very different from the 2006.
Thanks for sharing. Everything seemed fine when I checked it out, but I didn’t check for oil spots. Older cars leaking oil isn’t unusual though.
Yeah, a little oil leak wouldn’t worry me too much on an older vehicle.
If your odometer is mechanical, it’s likely a broken worm gear. I had mine replaced on a '97 along with the dash lights for under $200. Totally worth it.
The 5.4 Triton V8 has known issues with spark plugs cracking inside the cylinder. I’ve got an '07 F-150 with the same engine, and replacing all the plugs was a headache.
Used cars can hide a lot of problems, so inspect it carefully. Here’s a great checklist: Used Car Checklist.
If it looks good, have a mechanic inspect it. It might cost $100+, but they can find hidden issues. Here’s a sample evaluation form they might use: Vehicle Inspection Guide.
If it needs repairs, deduct those costs from the price or walk away if it’s too much.
Sounds like a good deal to me. The 5.4 from that year was better than earlier ones. At this mileage, if it’s been maintained and runs fine, it should hold up with regular care.
Better than earlier ones? What issues should I still be aware of?
