Should I buy a used Ford Expedition or an older one?

Hey everyone! I’ve been dreaming about getting a Ford Expedition (2015-2017 model years), but the cost of leasing one is outrageous, and buying a new one is just too much for my budget.

So I’m stuck trying to decide: should I go for a high-mileage 2015-2017 Expedition or a lower-mileage older model? The older ones are significantly cheaper, but I want to avoid constant repairs. Gas mileage isn’t great on any of them, especially the older ones, but that’s less of a concern for me than reliability.

Here are a few I’ve found:

  • 2015 King Ranch, 25k miles, $31k (I was going to try offering $25k, but it might be a stretch)
  • 2008 King Ranch, 120k miles, $10k
  • Several 2010s with 90-125k miles for $13k-$15k

If you’re a mechanic or just know a lot about Expeditions, what would you recommend? I’d really appreciate your thoughts. Thanks in advance!

Side note: I’ve test-driven tons of vehicles, and the Expedition is the one for me. It drives so smoothly—it’s amazing.

I had a new one with the 3.5 EcoBoost. That thing was a beast—fast and roomy for the whole family. If you can swing it, go for the King Ranch.

If you’re trying to get a ‘15 King Ranch for $25k, you’ll probably need to settle for something with higher mileage, like 50k+. Or consider a basic XLT with around 35k-40k miles. Honestly, $31k for a King Ranch sounds too good to be true—might have an accident history.

@Ben
You’re right—it does have an accident on the report. They were supposed to send me pictures, but I haven’t heard back in a few days. Feels shady.

I’d recommend looking at 2014 or newer to avoid the 5.4 V8. You might find some XLT trims with decent features like leather seats, so don’t overlook them.

Thanks! I’ve been looking at less loaded models, too. Do the 2014s still have the V8, or do you mean I should aim for 2015-2017?

@Rene
You’re right—go for 2015 and up if possible. The 5.4 has had too many issues over the years. Good luck, and remember that Expeditions tend to be better value than the GM counterparts.

It seems like everything has recalls these days—Tahoes, Yukons, F150s, you name it. I saw that even the 2018 Expedition got recalled. I’ve read about issues with the 2015-2017 models, like no heat/AC or going into limp mode on the highway. Definitely need a warranty. I just wish there were a bulletproof used Expedition out there!

If you’re open to other options, check out early Lexus LX570s. You can find 2008-2011 models for $25k-$35k, and they’re incredibly reliable.

Thanks, they do look nice! I wonder how they drive.

@Rene
They’re very smooth and quiet on the road. Plus, they have automatic height control, which is a great feature.

That’s not what the OP is asking about…

@Oakley
Fair enough, I misunderstood. What do you think OP should do?
