I’m looking at a 2022 Ford Expedition XLT 4x4, manufactured in November 2022. It has 32k miles on it, and the original MSRP was $58,645. Hertz is selling it for $42,000.
I’ve never bought a car from a rental company before. Is this a good deal? Any advice?
We bought a 2020 Max Limited from Avis during COVID and have put 35k miles on it without any issues. But you should definitely check it thoroughly. When I was shopping, the first one I test drove had a cam phaser issue—it was obvious as soon as the engine started. Make sure to test all the electronics and take it for a good drive. If you’re worried, have an independent mechanic check it out. Buying from rental companies can be fine as long as you’re careful.
It’s likely been through automatic car washes a ton.
Nobody—renters or Hertz employees—treated it with much care.
Maintenance is probably limited to oil changes.
If you’re planning to keep it for a while, you might want to consider getting the Ford extended warranty (up to 11 years or 175k miles). That’ll run you about $3-4k but could save you headaches later. An independent mechanic can help, but they won’t spot every issue from rental wear-and-tear.
To me, the price doesn’t feel low enough to justify buying a rental, but I know it’s tough to find 2022 Expeditions that weren’t rentals these days.

How about a 2021 Expedition Max with 55k miles for $35k? That’s what I’m considering since my family is growing, and I need to replace my Highlander this year.

What trim level is it? Compare it to certified pre-owned models in your area to see if the price difference makes sense.
I’ve bought several rental cars and even a rental motorhome. They’re usually well-maintained, maybe a bit rough cosmetically, but I’ve had good experiences. I also like the 12-month warranty that Hertz offers. Overall, I think it’s a pretty decent deal.
