Should I buy a used Expedition from Hertz?

I’m looking at a 2022 Ford Expedition XLT 4x4, manufactured in November 2022. It has 32k miles on it, and the original MSRP was $58,645. Hertz is selling it for $42,000.

I’ve never bought a car from a rental company before. Is this a good deal? Any advice?

Just remember, rental cars are often driven hard and not treated gently.

We bought a 2020 Max Limited from Avis during COVID and have put 35k miles on it without any issues. But you should definitely check it thoroughly. When I was shopping, the first one I test drove had a cam phaser issue—it was obvious as soon as the engine started. Make sure to test all the electronics and take it for a good drive. If you’re worried, have an independent mechanic check it out. Buying from rental companies can be fine as long as you’re careful.

@Sage
Thanks! I’m definitely planning to do a test drive soon.

A rental with 32k miles? Keep in mind:

  1. It’s likely been through automatic car washes a ton.
  2. Nobody—renters or Hertz employees—treated it with much care.
  3. Maintenance is probably limited to oil changes.

If you’re planning to keep it for a while, you might want to consider getting the Ford extended warranty (up to 11 years or 175k miles). That’ll run you about $3-4k but could save you headaches later. An independent mechanic can help, but they won’t spot every issue from rental wear-and-tear.

To me, the price doesn’t feel low enough to justify buying a rental, but I know it’s tough to find 2022 Expeditions that weren’t rentals these days.

@Westley
How about a 2021 Expedition Max with 55k miles for $35k? That’s what I’m considering since my family is growing, and I need to replace my Highlander this year.

What trim level is it? Compare it to certified pre-owned models in your area to see if the price difference makes sense.

@Westley
It’s an Expedition Max. I’ll check out local prices for certified pre-owned options.

I’ve bought several rental cars and even a rental motorhome. They’re usually well-maintained, maybe a bit rough cosmetically, but I’ve had good experiences. I also like the 12-month warranty that Hertz offers. Overall, I think it’s a pretty decent deal.

At least you know it had regular maintenance.
