Losing My Mind Researching… 2020 Expedition Limited vs 2021?! Help!

Can someone tell me the REAL differences? I have a 2003 Tahoe that I absolutely love, but my husband is a hater and says it’s time for something newer :joy:.

I’ve settled on the Expedition but want to get the best value. Should I go for a 2020 Platinum or Limited, or would a 2021 Limited be better? I can’t find solid info on what actually changed.

And then there’s the 2022s… but the only real difference I see is that giant, obnoxious screen and the rounded bumper.

My 2019 Platinum has them.

I’ve got a 2020 Limited Stealth with every possible option (303A package). Compared to a 303A Platinum, the only things mine doesn’t have are front massage seats and the rear entertainment system. I went with the Limited mainly for the look.

I traded my 2022 Limited for a 2019 Platinum. Way happier with the ‘19.

I got rid of the ‘22 because it was a COVID-era vehicle… SO MANY RECALLS.

The ‘19 has been awesome. Also, I personally think the front end on the ‘19 looks the best out of all of them.

@Kim
How did you feel about the giant screen in the ‘22?

The screen was cool, but I got sick of the recalls. The service guy at the dealership straight-up told me he wouldn’t touch anything between 2020 and 2023. I know not everyone had issues, but I did, and it was super frustrating.

Also, like I said, I prefer the ‘19’s front-end styling.

@Kim
This is super helpful, thanks!

I’ve got a 2022 and love the screen. Super easy to use, no problems so far.

The 2018-2021 models are basically the same, depending on trim. I bought a ‘19 Platinum MAX in early 2020 because Ford was offering an $8,000 rebate.

Wikipedia actually has a pretty detailed breakdown of trim level differences if you want to dig into it.

@Sloane
How do you like it? Anything that annoys you about it?

I love it. We got the 8-seater, which was tough to find. Plenty of space for gear, dogs in the back, and three kids in the middle row.

It only has 35K miles because of COVID, but no complaints so far!

@Sloane
Nice! We’ve got kids and dogs too, so we always have tons of stuff.

I had a 2020 Limited and loved it. Just upgraded to a 2024 Limited and I love it just as much. The big screen seemed intimidating at first, but it’s actually really easy to use.

Here’s the Ford brochure for 2021: link

If you Google your model year + ‘brochure,’ you can usually find a detailed comparison of trims and features.

I have a 2020 Platinum MAX, fully loaded except for the rear entertainment system.

Love the truck, but a few things annoy me:

  • Auto Park is useless.
  • Auto-sensing wipers never work right.
  • The hands-free tailgate barely works when I actually want it to.
  • The power running boards sometimes stick.

@Micah
Ahh, I’ve seen complaints about the liftgate and running boards!

@Micah
Yep, I have a 2021 Platinum and can confirm all of these issues.

Good to know—so the same problems carried over to ‘21.
