Looking for advice… Expedition or Suburban?

We’re in the market for a full-size SUV for our growing family. I’m considering an Expedition Max (2020-2022) or a Chevy Suburban in the same range. I need a spacious third row for passengers and something comfortable for me to drive. I’ve heard mixed things about reliability, especially with transmissions on the Expedition. But then again, most people share complaints over praise.

Has anyone switched between these two? Or have advice, experiences, or recommendations to share? Thanks in advance!

It’s kind of a gamble for reliability these days. If you’re worried about unexpected repairs, I’d recommend going CPO and getting an extended warranty. It might save you from major costs on a Ford 10-speed or a Chevy engine down the road.

You should test-drive both. Personally, I think the 2021+ Suburban has a nicer interior compared to the 2020-2021 Expedition. Ford improved the Expedition’s interior in 2022, though.

If interior space is the priority, the Suburban has a slight edge. It also rides smoother than the standard Expedition. That said, an Expedition with the CCD suspension rides really well too.

Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts! Much appreciated!

I was looking for a Suburban or Yukon XL and happened to try out an Expedition. After driving all of them, I went with the Expedition because of its smooth ride. No matter what brand, people always have something to complain about. You just have to pick what you like most and hope for the best.

For me, the Expedition’s ride and towing performance have been excellent. I’m really happy with the choice.

@Zhen
That’s great to hear! Do you think the Expedition’s ride is comparable to the others? Also, what’s your take on the third-row space?

@Zhen
The third row is surprisingly spacious. I’m over 6 feet tall and fit back there comfortably. I also think the Expedition’s third-row seats are more comfortable than GM’s. My nephew even said the ride feels like a limousine.

I’ve got a 2022 Expedition Platinum (standard length). We also drove a Lincoln and a Yukon Denali. The Expedition felt the most stable, and I liked the tech and seats better than the Yukon. The Lincoln has amazing seats, but it’s pricier and the ride is more floaty.

I’m 6’5” and fit in all three rows of the Expedition, even without the Max length. In the Yukon, the third row felt cramped and better suited for kids, even in the XL/Suburban version.

For reliability, Ford fixed the cam phaser issues, but GM’s 6.2L engines have lifter problems. The 5.3L is more reliable but lacks power compared to the Expedition. That EcoBoost engine is surprisingly quick! Just make sure to get a CPO model with a solid warranty to cover any potential issues.

@Emerson
Thanks for all the detailed info! Really helpful to know. I’ll definitely go the CPO route. Appreciate your input!

The Expedition has more third-row room than the Suburban.

Plus, the seats are full-sized. The Suburban’s third row feels like half-seats.

That’s what I’ve been reading too! The specs seem to back that up. Thanks for confirming!

We’ve got a 2021 Expedition Platinum Max with a second-row bench. It’s been perfect for our three kids (ages 4-7). It’s a great family hauler and super comfortable. I’ve rented Suburbans and Yukons as well, and I still prefer the Expedition. The interior feels more open, and the seats are much better.

Access to the third row is easier in the Expedition too. The way the seats flip in the GM models doesn’t work well with car seats. I’m 6’5” and 300 pounds, and I can still access the third row with no issues. It’s a bit snug headroom-wise, but still usable.

@Terry
That’s really good to know, especially with the car seats. Thanks for sharing!

@Terry
How does the ride quality compare between the Expedition and the GM models? Are they similar?

@Terry
It depends on the trim and your preferences. In general, GM models ride a bit stiffer, while the Expedition feels softer and more cushioned, especially with the upgraded suspension. It does have more body lean in corners, though. Seat comfort plays a big role too, and Ford’s seats are way more comfortable in my opinion.
