Considering purchasing a 2007 Ford Expedition EL Eddie Bauer. It’s priced under $3,000 but has 290,000 miles. Looking for opinions on whether it’s worth it for a daily driver or if I should keep searching. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
That’s got the 3V 5.4 Triton motor. Beware of cam phaser issues. If you don’t want to spend an extra $5k for a potential engine replacement, I’d avoid it.
Cam phasers are an issue, but if maintained properly, this engine can last over 300k miles. Fixing the phasers would cost around $1,000 per side, so it’s not as bad as a full engine replacement.
With 290,000 miles, I’d keep looking. If your budget is $3,000–$5,000, try checking federal or police auctions for better-maintained options.
At that mileage, I’d pass.
The 3V 5.4 has common issues: timing problems, spark plugs, intake manifold, etc. It’s a lot of trouble. I’d stay away unless you’re prepared for major repairs.
I have a similar 2007 and did a full timing job, locking out the cam phasers. Now at 290k miles, it runs great. But if you’re passing, let others know where it’s located!
I’ve owned an older Expedition and only drive it occasionally. For a daily driver, this might be risky given its high mileage and known timing belt issues.
If it hasn’t had a timing job, it’s overdue. Parts are $1,200–$1,500, and a shop will charge $5,000. I’d pass unless there’s documentation of proper maintenance.
It could be fine for camping or occasional use, but I wouldn’t rely on it as a daily driver.
Thank you all for the advice! Based on your feedback, I’m going to pass on this one and keep looking. I’ll also check out police auctions and increase my budget slightly to find a more reliable daily driver. Appreciate the help!
