I was on Ford’s website and built out a base XLT Expedition with a few options, and it came out to about $70,000 CAD (plus tax). I’m just curious—who’s actually spending this kind of money on these SUVs? Who’s the target buyer?
Families with a lot of kids and money to spend. A Transit might make more sense practically, but let’s be real—those things are ugly and scream ‘church group shuttle.’

You can fit just as many kids in an Explorer, and it’s way cheaper. But the towing capacity and extra cargo room of the Expedition are big selling points. Personally, I’m super happy with my 2017 Flex Limited with Ecoboost. Too bad Ford discontinued it, but I guess it overlapped with the Explorer too much.
@Asa
When the Flex came out, I thought it looked like a stretched-out Scion xB, but I’ve gotta admit, it’s insanely comfortable and drives really well. Everyone I know who owns one loves it.
What else can you get in this size that’s reliable and nice? Tahoe/Yukon cost about the same, Armada’s a bit cheaper but smaller and not as reliable long-term. Where I live, Expeditions and Tahoes are everywhere. We’re planning on getting a newer one soon.
@Sage
If it’s just about hauling people, the Transit beats the Expedition on practicality. But looks-wise, the Expedition is way ahead. The Transit can’t compete there.

Minivans are better in almost every practical way—cheaper, better on gas, easier to load passengers—but nobody wants to drive a minivan. It’s like announcing to the world that you gave up on having fun.

Don’t forget towing and resale value. An Expedition can tow a boat or trailer easily, and it’ll hold its value way better than a minivan.

Anyone else remember what people used to call vans before the Transit? ‘Rape vans.’ The fleet versions don’t hold a candle to passenger vehicles in the looks department.
I think the Expedition looks great. I can’t see myself ever needing something that big, but if I did, I’d go with the Ford over other big SUVs.
That 3.5L Ecoboost engine is so much fun to drive!
Scotty Kilmer was just talking about steering issues on Tahoes and Yukons. So yeah, the Expedition seems like the top choice right now. The target buyers? Families with 3–4 kids, a dog, and a need to haul or tow a camper. It’s also great for people who want an SUV built on a real truck frame that’ll last 150k+ miles.
Is it selling well? Yep. We haven’t had a new one on the lot in months, and the used ones sell before they even finish inspection. Of all Ford’s SUVs, the Expedition is the most capable and tends to last the longest.
@Nico
I get it—if you need to haul a bunch of kids and tow stuff, this is the right vehicle. But if towing isn’t a factor, wouldn’t a minivan make more sense? It’s cheaper and more practical, even if people hate how they look. Personally, I’d rather save the money and go with a minivan.
@Kipp
Depends on the market. Where I am, we sell way more trucks and SUVs than cars. Expeditions hold their value way better than minivans. A 5-year-old van loses 70% of its value, while an Expedition might only drop 35–50%, depending on mileage. A 10-year-old van is usually worthless, but a 20-year-old Expedition in decent shape can still find a buyer.
