Looking to buy a 2022 Ford Expedition but can’t help but think: is paying $5-6k extra for the Max worth it? They get the same gas mileage, so that’s not an issue. Do you ever feel like you don’t have enough space with the regular Expedition?
Edit: I should add that I have no real need for any towing capabilities now or in the foreseeable future. Plan on keeping this thing until it runs dead. I also have 2 kids under 2 .

My wife has a standard-length 2016, and we agreed if we get another Expedition in the future, it will be a Max. Storage is a joke with the 3rd row up.
That’s what I was thinking. Especially with young kids and needing room for a stroller/wagon. I was originally looking at a Palisade or similar, but those have no trunk space and a 3rd row that is practically unusable for an average person.
@Micah
We’ve loaded our Max up with 4 adults and 2 kids in car seats. Didn’t even need to take the stroller out. Unlike the Suburbans/Tahoes/Yukons, the Expedition 3rd row fits full-grown humans comfortably.
Fuel tank is 28.3 gallons on the Max. That alone (along with more behind-the-3rd-row storage) was reason enough for us. Generally, more payload is available in the Max as well. The 360 camera alleviated my wife’s concern about parking it, and it’s actually super handy. I’d vote Max every time unless you need the SWB for your specific use case.
I have a '21 Max. Took a 10-hour trip to the Smoky Mountains. With 3 kids, I still barely had room for everyone’s stuff. Couldn’t imagine not having a Max. The standard Expedition is barely enough to get groceries if the 3rd row is up.
I have 3 kids under 5. Standard is still fine, but I keep one rear seat down to maximize storage while the oldest is in the back. If you’re sticking with two kids, you’d be fine without the Max. Ultimately, it’s personal preference on vehicle size.
We used to have a non-Max Expedition and loved it except for the minuscule back storage with the 3rd row up. Now we have a 2021 Max, and the rear storage is so much more usable. Highly recommend the Max, especially for road trips or family outings.
You’ll appreciate the extra room. Also, though you lose a couple hundred pounds of towing capacity, the Max is much more stable with the longer wheelbase.
Don’t even waste your money on an Expedition if it’s not a Max. Just get an Explorer. The extra foot of cargo space with the Max makes it totally worth it, especially for family trips or with a dog. My wife was nervous about the size at first but got comfortable with it quickly.
