Thinking about getting either a Ford Expedition or Chevy Tahoe. I’ve been reading up on both but still not sure which one makes more sense. Would love to hear your opinions on reliability, features, and anything else I should know. What do you think?
My sister got an ‘18 Tahoe last year, and she loves it. She still has her ‘08 too. Chevy and Ford definitely know how to make good SUVs and trucks.
I manage a fleet of 100+ Chevy/GM/Ford full-size trucks and SUVs, and honestly, there’s not a huge difference in reliability between them. Most are pretty dependable, especially if they’re used for regular road driving. I keep them until about 150k miles.
My last four vehicles were an ‘07 Suburban, ‘11 Suburban, ‘15 Yukon XL Denali, and now a ‘19 Expedition Max Platinum. At 130k miles, the Expedition has had just a few minor issues.
If you’re looking at used, I’d go for the ‘18+ Expedition over the pre-’21 Tahoe/Yukon models. But really, it’s all about personal preference and finding one that’s been well-maintained.
@Kai
Thanks for breaking it down! That’s super helpful.
Chevy’s been making Tahoes forever, and they’re super popular for a reason. Expeditions are good too. What years are you looking at?

I’m looking at 2018 or newer models.

The ‘15–‘20 Tahoes are awesome, but I’m not a fan of the newer design.
@Andi
Tahoes and Suburbans look great, but the Yukons… those headlights are a no from me.

I don’t mind the Yukons, but the Escalade’s taillights? Nope.

Agreed. Escalade taillights are hideous.
Tough choice. I like Ford’s V6 with the aluminum body and the King Ranch trim. The Yukon is nice too, especially with the magnetic suspension—it’s a great feature. If you’re going used, check for engine issues on some Ford years. Also, consider a Lincoln Navigator. They’re similar to the Expedition but have better interiors and are often better maintained. For reliability and resale, the Toyota Sequoia is solid, but the newer ones are way overdue for an update. The early 2000s Sequoias looked much better in my opinion.
Are you planning to tow or do any serious off-roading? If not, you might not need a big body-on-frame SUV with terrible gas mileage. Something like a Kia Telluride or Volvo XC90 could be better for road trips—they’re comfier and better on gas. But if you need towing capacity, I’d go for the ‘15–‘20 Tahoe/Yukon. The Denali has the 6.2L V8, which is powerful and can get decent highway mileage thanks to cylinder deactivation.
@Jesse
I agree. If you’re not towing, crossovers are a better option. I drove a rental Expedition, and while it had great features, it felt huge and sluggish compared to unibody SUVs. Something like an Explorer, CX-9, or even a Pilot could work better.
@Dane
Looking for a road trip car for two people and tons of room? Next thread: ‘Why is gas so expensive?’

- People hate us cause they ain’t us.
- Gas is still way cheaper here than in most countries.
@Jesse
Yeah, most of us don’t really need something this big. But they’re nice to have.
Toyota Sequoia. Reliable as hell.

Sure, but they’re ugly and just don’t feel the same.

The new ones are definitely oversized hippos. But the ‘05–‘07 first gens still look good.

Or skip the Toyota tax and go for a Nissan Armada. Super underrated and just as capable.
