F150 or Expedition… and is the V8 gone for good?

I love my 2020 F150 with the Coyote V8—great mileage, low wear and tear, and that classic V8 power. My wife is pushing me to trade it in for an Expedition, but from what I can tell, the 2023-2024 Expeditions only come with the 3.5L Ecoboost V6. Is there any way to get an Expedition with a V8, or is that not an option anymore?

Get the Expedition and tune the engine. I had an ‘18 Expedition, and after tuning, it was crazy fast. I miss that acceleration even though I love my current ‘22 with the 5.0. When it’s time to trade again, I’m leaning toward the 3.5L.

Not really worried about speed. Sport mode is already plenty fast for what I need.

Lol, you’ve clearly never been in a tuned 3.5 Ecoboost. Sport mode doesn’t give you extra horsepower, it just shifts differently.

Sport mode just holds gears longer, making it feel a bit quicker but not faster overall. And for the record, Ecoboost models have sport mode too.

No V8 option anymore. But honestly, the 3.5L is a great engine and handles the Expedition’s weight better than the 5.0 would. Reliability and gas mileage between the two are very similar, so I wouldn’t stress too much about it.

If the Expedition makes sense for your needs, just go for it.

Why not have your wife trade in her car for the Expedition instead? If you love your truck, no point in giving it up if you’re not ready. My wife drives a 2020 Expedition Max Limited, and honestly, it’s basically a truck with a cap and more seats. Just focus on whether the SUV fits your lifestyle better than the truck, not just the engine.

Expeditions are way more expensive than F150s.

Yeah, unless you’re financing, the cost difference pretty much kills any potential gas savings.

No more V8s, but there’s an electric Expedition option rumored for 2025. Might be worth waiting for that.

I went from an ‘18 F150 with the 5.0 to an Expedition with the 3.5L. Honestly, it was my favorite vehicle ever. We leased it, and when it came time to decide, the buyout was too expensive, so we went back to a truck lease. Still miss the Expedition, though.

If you want a V8 in a large SUV, GM is your only option now.

There’s no reason for Ford to put the 5.0 in the Expedition anymore. The 3.5L beats it in power and efficiency. That said, both engines have their quirks, so it’s not like one is vastly more reliable than the other.

One thing the 5.0 does offer is the ability to add a snow plow. Turbos can’t handle that due to cooling issues.

Funny enough, my truck came with the snow plow package, and I live in southeast NC. Turns out it was a NY truck before I bought it.

Cam phaser issues on the 3.5 are a nightmare. I’m waiting for replacements now, and they’re on backorder.

Same here—my truck’s been sitting for two months waiting for the updated phasers. The strike probably isn’t helping, either.

@Shai
I’d argue that the Coyote V8 has been reliable for years. Turbos just add more complexity and cost for repairs, not to mention they run hotter and can guzzle more fuel.

The 5.0 is solid, but it’s not without its own problems, like excessive oil consumption in some years. Cylinder deactivation could also bring new issues down the line.

The V8 option for the Expedition has been gone for a while now. If Ford had kept it, they might’ve appealed to folks who prefer simpler engines over turbocharged ones. Feels like a missed opportunity.
