Considering a 2022 Expedition Max – Reliability & Certification?

Hi everyone,

I’m looking into purchasing a 2022 Expedition Max and wanted to know how reliable your 2021 and 2022 models have been. Also, is it worth paying several thousand more for one that is Ford Gold certified?

If you can manage to go for a 2023 model, they fixed a significant failure point in the 10R80 transmission, which can be very costly to repair. Transmission issues were a known problem on earlier models, and repairs aren’t cheap.

A 2022 built after mid-August should be safe from those issues as well.

That’s really useful to know, thanks!

I’m confident the '22 is free from cam phaser problems. If your budget allows, go for the certified one. Also, before you commit, ask the dealer to print out any warranty work associated with the VIN. It’ll show you the car’s repair history.

@Brady
Great advice! Thank you!

I own a 2022 Max Limited Stealth. Unfortunately, I had to get the cam phasers replaced at 27,000 miles. On the bright side, the car drives much smoother now after the fix.

I had a 2020 XLT Max with 30,000 miles and started experiencing transmission clunking. The wait time for parts was 6-8 months, so I decided to trade it in.

Was this a recent issue?

@Blane
Yes, about 7 months ago. I think the problem has been addressed in the 2022 models.

I wouldn’t recommend it! My Expedition has been the worst vehicle I’ve owned, with constant issues.
