Considering a 2012 Expedition Limited – Any Experiences?

I’m looking into purchasing a 2012 Ford Expedition Limited with 101,750 miles. The Carfax looks clean, but I’d love to hear from owners or past owners about their experiences with this year. Are there any common issues I should be aware of beyond normal maintenance? How’s the reliability? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I have a 2011 Expedition, which is the same generation. Mine has 198k miles and has been very reliable.

First, make sure to use full synthetic 5W-30 oil and change the transmission fluid (just drop the pan and replace the filter—don’t flush it). If it’s the Triton engine, only use Motorcraft parts, and be diligent with maintenance.

Common things to look out for:

  • Fuel pump replacement by 180k miles
  • Ceramic brake pads last 20-40k miles, and rotors about 2-3 pad changes
  • Timing components and high-pressure oil pump may need replacement around 180k miles
  • Vacuum booster valve might need replacing as the vehicle ages (causes odd brake/engine/HVAC issues)

Overall, the 5.4 Triton is solid as long as you keep the oil clean and stick to Motorcraft parts.

I’ve had a 2010 Expedition since new. It’s been very dependable with 183,000 miles now. Just a couple of early issues—transmission harness and fuel sender/filter—but nothing major since. Regular maintenance is key. I recommend:

  • Coolant and brake fluid flushes
  • Differential oil change
  • Serpentine belt replacement
  • Regular oil changes (I do mine every 4,500 miles)

As long as you stay on top of these things, it should serve you well.

I’ve owned a 2010 Limited for 2.5 years, and it’s been great. I’ve put 36k miles on it (now at 181k) without major issues. I did have to fix some electrical quirks (garage door opener, rain-sensing wipers) and had a coolant hose pop off due to a poorly tightened clamp from prior service. Otherwise, it’s been just routine maintenance.

  • Fuel economy: 16-17 mpg mixed driving
  • Common issue: Sunroof failure (mine’s broken, and I don’t plan to fix it)
  • Advice: Keep up with oil changes and brake maintenance. It’s a strong, reliable truck.

I own a 2012 EL XLT with 220,000 miles, and it’s been the most reliable vehicle I’ve ever owned. Of course, small things pop up, but nothing major so far. The biggest annoyance is paint peeling on the rear hatch, which seems common for this generation.
