Can someone explain this dealership report?

I took my car in because it kept slipping gears and then all of a sudden while driving it would blink red, say “Shift SYS FAULT. Service required” after accelerating and I couldn’t accelerate or do anything. Once I laid off the gas pedal the sensor would go away and I could drive again. It happened between 4/5 and 6th gear.

Took it in to Ford dealership for service and this is what they sent me. What does it mean?

They are just showing the fault code that is stored in the computer’s memory. That’s a fairly common transmission fault code on Expeditions. It’s an internal transmission fault code, which could be a valve body failure, but sometimes requires an overhaul. Do you have any warranty? It’s unusual that they would just send you the fault code without an explanation.

@Peyton
Yes! I have bumper to bumper coverage.

I reached out to the service supervisor that I took my car to and he said I’ll be getting a call soon (didn’t get a call today) but he is assuming an overhaul.

What does that even mean?

@Roux
The transmission will be removed from the vehicle, disassembled, and the defective parts will be replaced. Transmission technicians are very busy nowadays, so be patient, and try to get a free loaner vehicle.

@Peyton
Thank you for the info!

Do you typically know how long it may be out of commission? And do you have any experience with an overhaul? Does it usually fix the issues for good? Or is it a temporary thing?

I remember they replaced my cam phaser for a cold start rattle noise and it only helped briefly.

@Roux
Yes, I’m a recently retired Ford automatic transmission technician. The time to repair varies greatly, depending on the work backlog, parts availability, etc. There are some known issues with a few components that Ford has addressed with new, revised parts, particularly the CDF clutch cylinder and the valve body. If your technician identifies and replaces all the defective parts with the new revised Ford parts it should be good as new.

@Peyton
Awesome! Thank you!! This gives me some peace of mind. I was worried I’d have to get a new car and I simply can’t afford that at the moment.

Do you also know anything about the cold start rattling noise? Do you think this overhaul will fix that issue for good, too? Or is that just something that I won’t have luck fixing?

This is consistent with a known TSB. Get ready to get a new transmission. Hopefully you are under warranty.

I am, thankfully!

The service supervisor said an overhaul? He didn’t elaborate though so I’m not too sure what that means.
