Best year for a used Expedition? Looking at 2020-2023 models

I’m thinking about upgrading from my Explorer to a used Expedition (2020-2023, 4x4). I need the extra room since I carry a lot of stuff for work. I’m also considering doing a 2-3 inch lift and adding slightly bigger tires to give it a more aggressive look.

What’s the best year to go for? Any advice on what to watch out for?

You should check out the Expedition Timberline. It might already have exactly what you’re looking for.

The Timberline is my dream ride. Perfect mix of utility and style.

We got a 2022 Timberline, and it’s been great. It already comes with a factory lift and bigger tires, so you wouldn’t have to mess with those upgrades. Had it for 8 months and still love it.

I have a 2022 Timberline, and I absolutely love it. Just a heads-up: it might not fit in some parking garages, especially with the factory crossbars.

I bought a 2022 Platinum a few months ago and really like it. Just a note: I read that models built before August 2022 had a cam phaser issue, so I avoided those.

If you’re looking at 2020-2023, I’d suggest going for a 2023.

Here’s why:

  • The 2022s and later are supposed to have the CDF transmission fix.
  • However, 2022 had an interior refresh, which brought some reported electronic issues (according to Consumer Reports).
  • If you’re considering older models, I’d stick with a 2020 or 2021. The 2018 and 2019 models had some early production issues.

Personally, I like the pre-2022 interior better because it has physical buttons and knobs for everything. I went with a 2021 higher trim instead of a 2022 and haven’t regretted it. It feels more straightforward to use, and I love it so far.

Why does your family SUV need an ‘aggressive look’?

Lol. Fair question.
