I’ve got a 2007 Expedition with 220,000 miles on it. Still runs great, but it’s throwing a code I haven’t been able to track down. Looking to get another one, preferably an EL with 4x4, but not sure which years are the best to go for. Any recommendations?
I’d go with a 2015-2017. I picked up a ‘15 in November after my ‘07 died. The only thing I don’t love is the instrument cluster—it was a downgrade from the previous gen, but they fixed it again in 2018. If you care about Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, you’ll want a ‘16 or newer.
@Eden
Thanks! I do like the ‘15s. CarPlay/Android Auto isn’t a big deal for me. I’m mainly focused on reliability since this is for my family. The ‘07 has been great, but we need something with more space and fewer miles.
@Blaine
The interior in my ‘15 is almost identical to my ‘07, just missing the DVD player. As for reliability, adding turbos always adds some risk, and Ford went that route starting in 2015. You can find newer models with a naturally aspirated 3.5L V6, but it’s got less power for towing or hauling. Also, the 10-speed transmission they introduced in ‘18 has had some mixed reviews.
@Eden
Good to know, I appreciate the info!
Just a heads-up—2015-2017 models tend to have valve cover leaks, timing chain issues (because, well, it’s a Ford), and transmission shudder. I’m dealing with all three on my ‘15 Platinum right now. That said, I still like this gen. If you’re looking at one, definitely check the service records. Also, if you go with an EcoBoost, change the oil every 3,000-4,500 miles instead of following Ford’s recommended intervals.
@Avery
Didn’t know about those issues—appreciate the heads-up!
I have a ‘17 and love it. No cam phaser problems like the newer ones have.

Same here! My ‘17 has 200k miles and hasn’t given me any trouble.

That’s awesome! Mine’s at 98k.
@Leighton
Keep it going!

Hell yeah!
I’ve got an ‘02 with the 4.6L and 136,000 miles. No major issues—just replaced a few batteries and brakes over the years. But if you’re looking at early 2000s models, avoid the bigger V8s. They’re known for blowing out spark plugs, and then you’ve got to deal with helicoils.
If you want an EL, you’re looking at 2007-2017. After that, it’s called the MAX.

That’s exactly what I was looking for—something newer than my ‘07 but not too new. Ended up getting a 2013 EL that used to be a cop car!
Stick with the ones that had the 4-speed transmission.
These newer ones with 10+ speeds seem unnecessarily complicated and more prone to failure. Four gears were plenty.
Honestly, the newer Expeditions (2022+) are the best ones yet. Huge interior, solid ride, great tech, and decent gas mileage. Feels like a real SUV now instead of something disposable.
I wouldn’t even bother with anything older than 2018.
