Hello everyone, our 2022 Toyota Sienna was totaled by an uninsured motorist, and now we’re in the market for a new vehicle. We have twin 5-year-olds and a 3-year-old, so we need something spacious.
We’re considering either another Sienna or a used CPO Expedition Max Limited. For those of you with large families, how do you like the Max? Are there any issues I should be aware of before committing? I’ve done a lot of research but always value firsthand experiences.
I’ve had an Expedition Max for 12 years, and it’s been great with kids. Tons of storage and room for luggage even with all seats up. You can fit 4x8 sheets of plywood with the seats down. It’s powerful, quiet, and has lots of cup holders for road trips. The only downsides are parking and gas usage, but the benefits outweigh them.
We’ve got a 2021 Limited Max with 4 kids and a dog. It’s fantastic for hauling everyone and their stuff. I like the flexibility to reconfigure between maximum passenger space and cargo space quickly. The 3.5L EcoBoost has plenty of power, and we’ve been getting 21-23 mpg on the highway. At 60k miles, no major issues so far.
One thing to note: the rain-sensing wipers can be finicky, and the computer system sometimes lags. Otherwise, it’s been great.
I have a 2015 F150 that’s been super reliable, but I keep hearing about transmission issues with the Expedition. The space looks amazing, though, and it seems like it would make family life easier.
If you’re worried about transmission problems, aim for a 2022 model or a low-mileage 2017. The 2018-2021 models had known transmission issues (TSB 23-2123) and faulty cam phasers. The 2022 resolved most of these problems. The 2017 is also solid but has a less efficient transmission.
I use my Expedition Max to haul my giant German Shepherd. The space is incredible—he can even spin in circles in the back! It’s a dream to drive on long trips. Sorry to hear about the accident, but I think you’d love the Max.
We’ve got twins and a 3-year-old, plus a lab. Our 2020 Limited Max has been fantastic for road trips. We use a roof carrier for extra storage, and the captain seats have been great for the kids. No transmission issues here.
I bought a 2017 Expedition in 2022 after avoiding the 2018-2021 models because of the transmission issues. It’s been amazing. My only regret is not getting the Max version for more space.
