2020 XLT Tires… What Should We Get Next?

We’re at around 46k miles on our 2020 XLT with 20" wheels, still running the factory Hankook all-seasons. They’ve done fine overall—not the best in snow or mud, but we don’t run into those conditions much. This is mostly our highway car.

What should we consider for the next set? I’m looking for a good balance between overall performance, tread life, and low road noise. If they handle better in rough weather, that’s a plus too. Any recommendations?

Michelin Defender LTX M/S. I’m using these on my ‘15 Limited with 20" wheels. They handle winter pretty well and are good for light off-roading too, though my car mostly stays on pavement.

Thanks, I’ll look into these!

@Vic
Dang, it looks like they don’t come in my size.

They’ve actually replaced the Michelin Defender LTX M/S with the Defender LTX M/S2. That could be why you didn’t find it. I used them on my ‘18 Expedition with 20" wheels (275/55R20), and they were fantastic. Zero complaints from me.

@Ollie
Good to know, and that’s the size I need. Appreciate it!

I run the updated LTX M/S2 on my 22" wheels. They’re not certified as winter tires here in Ontario (no mountain/snowflake symbol), so they don’t qualify for the winter insurance discount. Just FYI in case that matters where you live. But I really like them—smooth and great in wet or dry conditions.

I also got Cooper Discoverer AT3 4S with the double peak symbol on 20" wheels for winter. If they end up not handling snow well, I’ll swap them out next year.

Best of luck!

I think the LTX2 model has a stiffer sidewall, which is better if you’re towing or carrying heavy loads. I don’t tow, so I didn’t need that feature. And yeah, the LTX M/S isn’t rated for severe winter conditions.

Just put these on about 500 miles ago. Huge difference from the Hankooks we had. Much quieter and smoother.

I’d recommend the Firestone Destination A/T2. I’m nearly at the end of my second set and plan to buy a third.
