I’m visiting my mom for a few weeks and her “minty” Expedition has a misfire on highway speeds hill climbs. I’m suspecting coil packs and plugs, but curious as to what brand replacement to use.
Also seen a question online to verify if straight or angle coil packs. Is there a way to tell before pulling them?
Another issue is I noticed a “grinding” like sound and I’m suspicious it’s the clutch pack in the rear end (H6 code rear end) popping. Especially under power through the turn. I’m thinking to drain the diff and refill with fluid and limited slip additive. Thoughts?
Check your ball joints
I’ve tried all sorts of coil packs and learned the hard way to stick with Motorcraft and if they don’t need it don’t do it…

Yeah, as he said it is best to stick to motorcraft, I tried some edge lock ones (I think that was the brand) and those would give out after a few months. Also make sure to look at ur ball joints especially the front ones. Those always give out first.

Will Forscan detect which cylinder is misfiring? That is the IOS version
@Francis
If a p code exists it will display on diag codes, yes.
Most of the time it will generate a p code

I’m getting a misfire signal in OBDLink App, but I get no solid cylinder code yet on the dash or stored. I downloaded the Lite App, so I’ll play with it tomorrow.
Copy.
Ok, I know it’s and old post by now, but 2003 still has the old 2V engine as did the previous generation.
I’ve owned a 1997 5.4 EB for ten years now and bought a set of new coils a year into my ownership. This summer one of them failed.
Now I have 7 MSD red coils and 1 Denso.
In these years there were 2V and 4V engines of 4.6 and 5.4 on Ford/Mercury/Lincoln models. One had angled coils the other one had straight. I think the 4V were straight and 2V were angled.
@Leo
I ended up changing all 8 spark plugs, boots and springs. The misfire I thought went away, but felt a tiny hesitation the other day at speed on a hill. I probably should have just swapped all the coils, but I had limited time to get parts while staying and helping my mom through heart surgery. I did get the axle fluid changed at a small shop and he checked out u-joints, ball joints, hubs, and didn’t see any obvious issues. The heavy clicking sound went away almost completely, but when it’s really warmed up, there is a tiny bit still happening.
